A month later...

Yesterday marked a month since I ran the Colorado Marathon. So, what have I been up to since then?

Well, I took the week after the race completely off from running. Then, I started back on day 8 post-race with some easy runs. This actually fit perfectly with my group's training cycle, as many folks are building a base this month for fall marathon training. I already have a strong base after a year of consistent training that has included 2 marathons, so I reframed the focus of my runs for May as recovery. My weekly mileage has been in the 32-35 range, which is quite a drop from where I had been in the past couple of months leading up to my race. I have been running 5 days/week consistently (taking a break from running 6 days/week for May) and going to yoga multiple times per week (4 times last week!). The lower mileage has given me a nice mental break and allowed me to enjoy not having every day focused on how I am going to get my mileage in for the day, recovering appropriately with sufficient sleep and good nutrition, and doing it all over again the next day (all the while managing my practice and our household).

One great thing about this training cycle is that Sadie has joined the Sole Survivors to train for the Chicago Marathon, so it has been a joy to spend time with her and run together again after several years away. Speaking of races, I had originally slated Philly as my fall marathon, but St. George opened up to guaranteed entry after they didn't fill their cap with the lottery and I just couldn't resist signing up for that one too! Only one of those will be a goal race though because I doubt my body can handle racing two marathons in consecutive months. Since St. George is one of the earlier fall races and Philly is one of the later races, there should be sufficient time in between for recovery.

The weather has definitely turned warmer and more humid, so I am having to acclimate to that all over again. I'm already having to monitor my fluid intake on Saturday morning long runs because summer running = sloshy tummy for mel, more often than not.

A couple of books that I have really enjoyed reading lately:
-My Best Race: 50 Runners and The Finish Line They'll Never Forget by Chris Cooper
-Onward! The Absolute, No B.S., Raw, Ridiculous Soul-Stirring Truth About Training For Your First Marathon by Brook Kreder
-Yoga Girl by Rachel Brathen

A couple of fun things that are coming up that I am looking forward to:
-We are going to Toronto next week to run the Nike Women's 15k.
-We are celebrating my birthday in August with a trip to Denver that will include yoga at Red Rocks and a 10k race in the foothills.
-And, not fitness-related, but we are heading to Europe for our annual summer trip at the end of the month!
